Even reading and understanting French fluently (speaking just when I am in good mood), I get confused with "et pourtant" or just "pourtant".
In French - POURTANT is almost like "but" in English, giving a concession idea.
Ex:
"J'adore la langue française pourtant je ne parle pas bien."
I loved the french language BUT I didn´t speak well.
In Portuguese - PORTANTO is "hence" or "so". It is a coordenative conjucntion.
Ex:
Eu adoro a língua francesa portanto eu falo bem.
I love the french language so I speak well.
Sorry for my french mistakes, my english mistakes... spanish is missing everything in my mind lately, but I hope you got my point.
